‘Cost of Living Shop’

As people struggle to make ends meet this winter a new YMCA shop is open once a month. The shop is filled with a range of items with everything given away free.

The shop is filled with a range of items – from children’s clothes, toys and crockery to winter coats – with everything given away free.

YMCA manager Juley Howard said: “We always get donated reams of good stuff. At the ‘cost of living’ shop, everything is free for people to take. The shop opened for the first time in October and we are pleased with the numbers coming along so far.”

“A lot of people are really struggling with the cost of living and are facing hard times,” said Juley. “There may be people who cannot afford to buy clothes for their children or a new winter coat for themselves due to the current economic crisis. The aim of the shop is to help people who are finding it hard to make ends meet.”

The shop run by a team of volunteers, based in the YMCA’s coffee lounge, is also offering hot drinks and refreshments for free. It also has computers and printers for people to use, also free of charge. You can meet your friends and sit and chat in the warmth, maybe even make a friend or two.

Opening times

The shop and community café are open to everyone and runs from 9.30am to 11.30am every month, with plans to be fortnightly.

It is currently appealing for donations of ladies winter coats which can be dropped into the YMCA. The shop opens again on 12 December and 2 January – all are welcome.
